The term Late
Antiquity in historical studies is used to designate an epoch, whose
extension is, however, contested. According to the prevailing view
established in the “Peter Brown School” it would cover the period from
200 to 750 CE. More recent scholarly work, though, carried out in
projects such as EDRIS (Göttingen), Corpus Coranicum (Berlin), SFB 980
“Episteme in Bewegung” (Berlin) or Garth Fowden’s“ The First Millennium:
from Augustus to Avicenna “and Daniel Boyarin’s “Dispersing Diaspora”
has called the current view into question. The striking evidence of
closely related argumentative patterns and stratagems that underpin the
radical transformations which “antique” texts and concepts went through
with the establishment of the three scriptural religions, renders the
delineations proposed until now highly implausible. Peter Brown’s
concession of a continuation of Late Antiquity into the Umayyad era
(until 750) is elusive, since it exclusively engages with the situation
of the Christian population in the early Islamic state. Any epochal
classification that is teleologically oriented toward the later emerging
“Europe” necessarily has to resort to pulling out early Islam
(including the Qur’an) from its ancestral embedding in a late ancient
landscape of debate – an essentialist view that calls for revision. The
dissociation of Late Antiquity from political rule and its re-allocation
not in a political but in an epistemic space and the reflection about a
new overarching epochal category such as the „First Millennium” are
urgently required to accommodate the currently vindicated new readings
of texts and concepts across the boundaries of languages and religious cultures. Jahrhundert

PALEOCORAN aims at bridging the gap between the history of the Quran as
known through the Arabic sources and the latest palaeographic researches
on the manuscripts and the actual reception of the various aspects of
the text as they can be documented in the in the Quranic library of the
Amr mosque in Cairo 7th to 10th century. To the present day, a study of
the actual history of the text within a coherent geographical context is
lacking. The fragmentary state of the early Quranic manuscripts,
scattered between various collections, has prevented any attempt at
examining thoroughly all manuscript evidence related to a specific
place. PALEOCORAN would rely on the reconstruction of the Fustat
manuscripts preserved as fragments all over the world. A digital
reconstruction will be set up in the shape of a web portal Bibliotheca
Coranica of Fustat (Old Cairo) online. Arabic sources, travel reports,
Ottoman sources, and archival material of the European collections on
trajectories of the manuscripts will be documented. The time span
covered by PALEOCORAN corresponds to significant moments for the history
of the Quranic text: the standardisation of the diacritical marks,
Arabic orthography, short vowel signs, the development of the variant
readings, and ultimately Ibn Mujahids (d. 936) reform in Bagdad which
completed the canonisation process of the Quran. PALEOCORAN would
analyse the Fustat collection and gauge the actual impact of these
changes. It will thus be possible to assess the local diffusion of the
variant readings and the reception of the canonical version. The various
changes in the material presentation of the Quran during this period
will also be researched. The manuscripts will be approached in a
multidisciplinary way, combining philology, palaeography, codicology,
art history and physico-chemical analyses. The latter might help
determine the origin of the various copies of the Quranic library.
Comparative studies with neighbouring manuscript cultures will be
carried out in order to define the mutual influences. PALEOCORAN will
contribute to a more precise understanding of the history of the Quran
based on the material evidence from the Fustat Quranic library, of the
Abbasid art of the book as well as of the cultural history of Fustat.
PALEOCORAN is based on the work of the French-German project CORANICA
(2011-2014) focussing on the earliest Quranic manuscripts (until 750 AD,
Hijazi style), transliterations of their text, and their edition.
PALEOCORAN aims at the virtual reconstruction of the Fustat collection, a
unified cataloguing of its approx. 360 fragments involved, and a
documentation of their trajectories (e.g., Codex of Osman to Samarqand
or Istanbul; European collections). The development of the Arabic script
(palaeography, letter shapes, diacritical signs, vowel system) and the
process of canonisation of the Quran will be studied on the basis of the
evidence of the Fustat Bibliotheca Coranica.

See here

Corpus Coranicum-Vorlesung 2014: La perception shi‘ite du contenu et de l‘histoire du Coran. For a period of little more than
20 years Muhammad proclaimed poetical texts, ‘suras’, that he had
received as revelations, and through his preaching set up a community.
These ‘suras’, which were later codified to form the Qurʾān, have lived
on as the very heart of Islamic self-expression. But what do we know
about the context of the Qurʾān, the Arabian Peninsula, on the eve of
the emergence of Islam? Islamic tradition tends to view the pre-Islamic
period of Arabian history as a “time of ignorance” (‘asr al-jāhilīya), a
label that has severely handicapped research on the history of Arabia
before Islam. Western research has tended to view the Qurʾān as a mere
compilation, a text simply grafted on Jewish and Christian traditions.
In order to take seriously the desideratum of reading the Qurʾān as a
message adressed to a Late Antique audience, one has to read the text
against its historical and cultural background. Such an attempt to
reconnect the text to its first listeners is made in the Corpus
Coranicum project of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and
Humanities.

The conference assembles specialists from the fields
of philology, archaeology, and epigraphy in order to discuss the
following questions: What kind of evidence concerning the Qurʾān’s
historical context can be gleaned from these disciplines? What are the
scholarly instruments to determine and to narrate the history of the
period immediately before Islam? Is archaeological evidence compatible
with historical knowledge derived from Nabatean and South Arabian stone
inscriptions? How are descriptions of pre-Islamic Arabia in Arabic
sources of the 8th and 9th centuries to be evaluated? In 2011 the
research cooperation “CORANICA: Du contexte au texte”, sponsored by the
German DFG and the French ANR, between the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of
Sciences and Humanities and the Académie des Inscriptions et
Belles-Lettres will start its work on the relationship between philology
and material evidence for the environment of the text of the Qurʾān.

You can download a poster and a flyer with the programme as PDF-documents here:

Poster (888 kB) and Flyer (449 kB)

Programme:

9:30: Michael Marx, Berlin: Introduction
10:00: Angelika Neuwirth, Berlin: “The Late Antique Qurʾān”
10:30: Robert Hoyland, Oxford: “Arabia in Late Antiquity“
11:00: Discussion

Coffee break

12:00:
Christian Robin, Paris/Aix-en-Provence: „The Linguistic Situation in
the Pre-Islamic Arabian Peninsula According to Epigraphical Evidence”
12:30:
Ricardo Eichmann, Berlin: „Pre-Islamic Arabia: its Cultural, Economic,
and Religious Landscape According to Archaeological Evidence“
13:00: Discussion

Lunch break

14:30: Barbara Finster, Bamberg: „Zur Geschichte der Kaaba“
15.00: Tilman Seidensticker, Jena: „The Religious Map of Pre-Islamic Arabia According to Arabic Sources from Islamic Times“
15:30: Ernst Axel Knauf, Bern: „Ibn al-Kalbi on Paganism and Christianity in Pre-Islamic Arabia”
16.00: Final Discussion

Vorträge von Hadiya
Gurtmann & Jens Sauer, ‘Documenting the Textual History of the
Qur'an: The Approach of the Corpus Coranicum Project (Berlin-Brandenburg
Academy of Sciences)’
